San Pedro Claver church, Cartagena

The Spanish priest San Pedro Claver was born in 1580 and is the Saint of slaves. When the slave ships arrived in the port of Cartagena he took care of hungry and sick people. This was absolutely necessary because many of the slaves died or became sick during the transfer from Africa. He baptised and helped more than 300,000 slaves. The priest is still very popular in Cartagena. In the church, you find at the altar piece a glass coffin with the bones of Saint San Pedro Claver. We also visited his praying room and sleeping quarters. He always slept on the floor like the slaves.

Cartagena shopping and Las Bovedas

Las Bovedas or the Dungeons are now a tourist shopping area. Originally build in 1796; the dungeons were used as storage rooms. Later they functioned as military prisons, which was very efficient because of the 15 meter tick walls. Here you don't find prisoners anymore but all kind of handcrafts and souvenirs. It is a special shopping area with typical Colombian items like t-shirts, art pieces, clothing, lace.... What you have to see is the fine Colombian coffee and cigars. Fruit ladies are everywhere in town, they want to join you for a photo, but you will have to pay one or two dollars. They are very assertive. It was nice to see the local products and the cigar girl was very beautiful and friendly, a contradiction to the fruit ladies.

The Inquisition palace, Cartagena

The Inquisition Palace is one of the most important historical buildings in Cartagena and dates from the late 18th century. So I can not really justify ignoring this museum. However, if there is one reason to lose all faith in the Church it must be the Spanish inquisition. The Spanish and the Roman Catholic Church have robbed Cartagena from all its natural resources and by using the inquisition they stole from the local population to build there fabulous churches in Europe. There was no tolerance; you had to believe in the Roman Catholic Church, if not, you were a witch or devil. Suspects had to undergo imprisonment, torture and death. The rich had to give their money and possessions to the church and they were released. The poor were tortured and murdered in the most extreme ways to frighten all others. You would believe in anything and give all your possessions before any question was asked. It is amazing that more than one billion people in the world are Roman Catholic, and have accepted to support there religious organisation after these criminal acts that lasted centuries. Even in Cartagena the religion is extremely important in the lives of the Colombians. One could question if this is out of fear or conviction. Let's hope this never happens again and that the modern Church will only do good things in people’s lives from now on.

Verdachten werden opgesloten, ondergingen folteringen of werden vermoord.

Views of the Cathedral of Cartagena, Colombia

The most beautiful element of the Cathedral must be the tower which is visible from many streets in the old city. You also see that this is important for Cartagena because this is restored and looks very attractive. At the time we were there, the church was closed so we could not enter. This tower is such a master piece that it could not be skipped in this blog. The walls and the entrance of the church still need a lot of maintenance.

Views of the port of Cartagena, Colombia

The port of Cartagena is known for cargo and cruise ships. Entering the port is spectacular, on the left side you see the skyscrapers and at the front of the ship the cargo harbour. This was the first port we were docking, in Grand Cayman we had to go on shore via a tender service. From the docks you have a nice view of the old city. The statue of Virgin Carmen in the middle of the bay is greeting sailors leaving the Port and this would protect them on their journeys on the ocean.

The beach of Cartagena, Colombia

In Cartagena, you find long wide sandy beaches next to the city centre. The weather is warm and many people enjoy a swim in the sea. On the other side of the pier, a few brave fishers were trying to pull in their catch. It was a fierce competition, heavy current and many Pelicans who were stealing the fish. These birds are so powerful that the fisher hand their hands full. A video will be published later.

General Impressions of Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena or Cartagena de Indias in Colombia was the second port on our cruise. We had high expectations of this city and we were pleased with what we saw. This city is a big with more than a million people. We visited the town with its colourful houses, a cathedral, church of Peter Claver, Inquisitions Palace, some nice squares, Navy museum, dungeons shopping centre and the Fort of San Felipe. Below you can find some pictures of the general impressions in town. Having some doubts about safety in Colombia, our feelings were positive, we never saw any problems and people were friendly. If you speak Spanish, it must be a great location to go on holiday. For all places we visited we could always find people who understood English.
