Whale watching in Juneau, Alaska

We have been in many regions where whales have been spotted but till now we never saw any. The whale watching tour operator in Juneau guaranteed us, we would see whales. To our surprise this rather large boat could accelerate extreme fast and turned into a real speed boat.

The captain seemed to have a navigation system capable of locating whales. Within 30 minutes he located several huge whales which even jumped out of the water. It was difficult to take pictures but we succeeded to take a few shots. On our way back to port we also saw some sea lions.

Staying at the JW Marriott Hotel, Quito

The JW Marriott Hotel in Quito is very large and luxurious. We were welcomed by the hotel staff with cupcakes and hot chocolate. Cacao is one of the export products of Ecuador and we were impressed. The room was spacious with a marble hot tub and separate shower. The breakfast was excellent and luggage services available. We left two suitcases in storage during our Galapagos trip.

This hotel with large swimming pool, spa and shopping center is in fact one of the big hotels of Quito. Most customers are here for business or continuing their trip to Galapagos. Although expensive, we can recommend this hotel. Book well in advance.

Boek lange tijd vooraf.

Typical South America, graffiti in Quito

South America, the continent of graffiti. Is this exaggerated? We don’t think so. Street art and graffiti is present everywhere. Driving by, we saw so many different art and paintings. It was however hard to take pictures. The graffiti in this article has been collected from two places: a military school wall and a city district.

Zuid-Amerika, het continent van de graffiti. Is dit overdreven? Wij denken van niet. Straatkunst en graffiti is overal zichtbaar.

Stepping across the Equator line in Quito

The Equator line is at a latitude of zero degrees which a marked by the tower monument in Quito and the yellow line on the ground. We took the opportunity to have our picture taking with Kristel in the Southern Hemisphere and me in the Northern. Funny. A visit to the museum in the tower is possible and you get nice views of the surrounding mountains.

In general the seasons do not change on the Equator line, it is always warm tropical weather. That’s what we thought but we didn’t take into account that Quito is on an altitude of about 3.000 meters. This causes a drop in temperature. So we are wearing a jacket in a so called tropical latitude destination. Be well prepared.

We already passed the Equator line twice by ship, once in the Galapagos and once on a cruise from Chili to Peru. This is celebrated on board. It was our first encounter on land and probably our last.
